What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy and How Can it Help Me?

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is a specialized area of physical therapy focused on the muscles of the pelvic floor—a group of muscles that form the base of your core and support the abdominal and pelvic organs. Often described as a “bowl” or “hammock” of muscles, the pelvic floor plays a vital role in stability, support, and function. These muscles can sometimes become weak or overly tense, leading to a range of symptoms. Individuals experiencing pelvic pain, weakness (which may appear as urinary leakage or pelvic pressure), or increased tension (such as pain with intercourse, urinary urgency or frequency, vaginismus, or constipation) may benefit from a pelvic floor physical therapy evaluation. Treatment aims to restore optimal muscle function, balance, and coordination to help eliminate symptoms and improve quality of life.
